The new heavy-duty hot press
Nossen / Freiberg, Hegewald & Peschke Meß- und Prüftechnik GmbH together with Xerion Advanced Heating GmbH has developed a new uniaxial high-load hot press for sintering powder metallurgy special alloys developed. This is characterized, among other things, by a very large light width of the press frame (width 1,300 mm / height 5,000 mm), which allows a usable furnace volume of 260 liters. The press can be loaded and operated manually or fully automatically. It is therefore suitable for research and development as well as for industrial applications in metallurgy and technical ceramics. The sintering process takes place in a vacuum atmosphere and at temperatures of up to 1500° C. In addition, the material is pressed horizontally from two sides by means of load stamps and a force of up to 500 kN. After eight months of joint development, the new hot press is now delivered in a double version to a customer in large-scale research.
1Development of a customer-specific high-temperature press
XERION ADVANCED HEATING GmbH is specialized in the manufacture of electrically heated furnaces with a focus on vacuum and protective gas atmospheres. Customers include renowned representatives of the ceramics and metallurgy industry, the solar and semiconductor industry, test laboratories and research and development institutions. Together with the measurement and testing technology specialists of Hegewald & Peschke GmbH, a new hot press for the sintering of powder metallurgical alloys developed. Both companies have already implemented joint customer projects, e.g. for the Technical Universities of Freiberg and Dresden.
In about eight months of development and construction time, an innovative hot press was created, which in the combination of dimension, pressure, temperature, Vacuum and two-way force action on the sample cylinder sets new standards. In particular, the force introduction on both sides represents a novelty for presses of this dimension.
The plant has now been delivered in a double version to a customer in large-scale research.
2Characteristics of the temperature system
The newly developed tempering system of Xerion GmbH operates under a vacuum atmosphere of up to about 10-5 mbar, at a maximum temperature of 1500 °C and under particularly high pressure. The special sintering process achieves the desired result only if the corresponding parameters can be continuously and precisely monitored and observed. For the highest possible

"In search of a suitable press, we contacted numerous manufacturers," explains Dr. Uwe Lohse, Managing Director of Xerion GmbH. "Many are specialized in series production in the automotive and pharmaceutical industries - the development of a large-format press tailored to our requirements appeared difficult. Hegewald & Peschke GmbH has finally convinced us above all by its flexibility and problem-solving competence. "
